"The whole mystery and the whole reality of painting lies in the brushstroke and its continuation."
A member of the Nouvelle École de Paris, André Lanskoy is a Russian painter. His work is characterised by a certain number of stylistic and iconographic constants. While the repetition of identical themes or signs is in no way an uncommon phenomenon in the work of any visual artist, the nature of these repeated elements can help to clarify the artist’s aesthetic motivations. In Lanskoy’s work, there are multiple stylistic repetitions, some of which seem to establish the very foundations of his approach. The importance of pictorial matter and colour to his work, then, appears to be one of the defining characteristics of his art.
