André MASSON

" In art, there is neither form nor object. There are only events, appearances, appearances. "

André Masson stands at the junction of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. He advocates automatic art where the hand is allowed to move freely across the canvas without a preconceived idea to discover ideas and images originating from the subconscious. Taking this method as a starting point, Masson developed the famous sand paintings made up of glue and sand of different colors. The delineation of forms and the accentuation of lines in his graphic works bear witness to the study of Far Eastern calligraphy. Masson often withholds violent and terrible visions by drawing swaying lines as if being in trance or also practicing writing in a state of ecstasy. However, behind the spontaneity and the passionate feeling, one can mostly recognize an orderly cubist-type structure in his paintings.
