Mimmo ROTELLA

Mimmo Rotella is an Italian artist and poet known for his collages made from torn advertising posters, which he calls "double décollages". Rotella's art is inseparable from the concept of language. His works illustrate his tendency for linguistic deconstruction in which has been engaged since 1949. His interest in linguistics leads to the invention of "epistatic" poetry which consists of onomatopoeia, whistles, sounds, words deprived of sense. This sound poetry will constitute the touchstone of his artistic conception, particularly in his relation to torn images. Beyond his passion for language, the collage technique, which was to be the defining feature of his works, comes from a poetics of the wall and a love for cinema and advertising posters.
