Georgia RUSSELL

Cutting out is a sort of freedom of expression. For me it’s drawing, but I draw with a scalpel.

Georgia Russell is a contemporary Scottish artist known for her meticulously constructed collages from found materials such as old books, sheet music, maps, and stamps. Georgia Russell works with surgical precision, diverting the scalpel from its medical function to an artistic tool. To achieve her three-dimensional paper works, she very meticulously cuts scores, drawings, journals, and photographs, sometimes even entire books, transforming conventional objects into fantastic works of art. She gets her materials from second-hand shops or antique shops. Discarded, these objects tell a personal story, and the information they contain makes tangible times long gone.
