Pierre ALECHINSKY

"At the tip of my brush, it occurs to me to summon a line. I live for such moments! Sweetness, shared: Behold, a line!"

Born in 1927, Pierre Alechinksy is, along with Karel Appel, Asger John, and Christian Dotremont, a member of the CoBrA group. Influenced by surrealism, Alechinksy prefers to work in large formats such as monumental murals. While his early works were characterized by social realism and a rejection of pure abstraction, by the 1950s the artist moved towards a more fluid and sensitive style. Fascinated by oriental calligraphy, the spontaneity of which attracted him, he made several trips to East Asia and made a documentary film in Kyoto on traditional Japanese art. From then on, calligraphy and action painting were featured in his creations. As a writer, he has published numerous books and illustrated - with often incivisve humor - the texts of Michel Butor, Cioran, and Tardieu.
