" As for the use I can make of new materials, I think it is significant, they can be the living and sensitized vehicle, the commonplace driver par excellence, for me, whereas I feel oil paint as a dead matter. "
Quickly associated with the movement of lyrical abstraction, Jean Degottex gradually detaches himself from it in order to follow his own path. He explores new fields, in particular extreme oriental calligraphy. His works evolve all along his life, from the gesture to the sign through writing; his work remains minimalist, the importance of the line never exceeding on his sensitivity. He’s interested in the Zen movement, and simplifies his gesture to be interested in the support and the process of creation, becoming works of art as such. The artist says : "it is the loss of the brush stroke that reveals the canvas."
