"The painting is a complex proposition in which previous visual experiences combine themselves in unpredictable ways, the imagination constantly creating new associations: one image expands into another, but its original form is in a constant state of flux."
One of the major representatives of New Figuration, the highly graphic art of Valerio Adami presents shapes, fragments of images, dislocated silhouettes and unpredictable combinations, owing much to Cubism and the work of Roberto Matta. His works are characterized by large, flat areas of color circumscribed by black lines, a form of compartmentalization which evokes the art of stained glass or vignettes. According to Valerio Adami, the line is an essential dialectical element of his pictorial language, representing the progression of thought. Everything starts from a point, then mixes metaphysics, psychology, and memory to create fictitious spaces.
