Co-founder of the CoBrA group along with Asger Jorn, Karel Appel is a Dutch artist known for his figurative abstract paintings with their expressive use of colors, shapes, and lines. Influenced by Jean Dubuffuet and the Art Brut movement, his art presents a bold gestural style and a rejection of the cultural and artistic values of traditional Post-War Art. Hence his enthusiasm for intuitive and experimental practice which encompasses a methodology inspired by primitivism and devoid of all rationalism and geometry.
