" I am an artist who has no idea, no subject in mind, no project. My painting is without intention... "
Born in 1956, Jean-Charles Blais became known in the 1980s, notably for his paintings on torn posters. He very quickly freed himself from the classical supports, passing from pages of old newspapers to cardboards or cans. In 1981, he participated in the exhibition Finir en beauté, bringing together various artists attached to the wave of free figuration. In his work, he plays with forms, whether they are simply sketched or meticulously worked. His first works are turned towards the study of the body and its representation, he lets himself be guided by his mind without prior reflection, thus painting characters with monumental bodies. Blais’ figures become more and more abstract, and he will say that the figures he paints are no longer characters but objects. The artist's work has always pursued an experimental goal, Jean Charles Blais never limiting his creativity and his ideas; for him "painting serves to understand the world".
