Jessica Rankin is an Australian artist born in 1971. She lives and works in New York, where she shares a studio with her partner Julie Mehretu.
Known for her large-scale embroideries, Rankin has recently been creating more intimate and personal compositions, combining watercolors and embroidered areas. Her compositions are mental maps created from memories of landscapes. For the artist, landscapes are vectors of emotion and poetic narratives, which she reinterprets through shifting forms.
The evanescence of matter on paper reflects the tangibility of her emotions and memories, and the wandering of her mind. Rankin says she chooses "gestures, colors, ways of doing things that are difficult to control".
