From his earliest works, the so-called Square Hole Paintings, his work has consisted exclusively of gray monochromes. He gives particular importance to the color of gray, which is always a unique tone due to the addition of several colors, applying it in several uniform layers and taking care to preserve the texture of the canvas. Alan Charlton's approach could be compared to that of the minimalists by renouncing all narration and valuing the process of developing the work. His works generate a rhythm that allows the gaze to escape the amorphous character of classic monochrome space.
